Visit the NEScene (http://nescene.brinstar.com)! Okay.... if you really look at the video game market, it becomes blatantly obvious that Nintendo (the NES specifically) is responsible for the popularity of the genre. But, which ones are the best (and also the all important question... WHY?) Dragon Warrior 1 came out, and it was an instant hit. There was a lot of building up that needed to be done in that game. (it took me hours to get the cash to buy all the goodies, and even longer to get enough juice to make it to the DragonLord), but it was otherwise very much cool! ***Neat trick number #1: Some game genies could make you have fun with this... want to start the game with the princess in your arms and the Healmore spell? Use the codes for: Infinite $$, Infinite Magic, and don't take damage from something (I think it was barriers)*** Then of course is Zelda. This game never gets old... I'm not going to insult anyone here by making mindless details. I just have 2 challenges for you. #1: Beat the second quest without dying. #2: Beat the first quest without the sword. Yes, that's right. I've done it. It's not that hard really... just learn to dodge well... Dragon Warrior moved on to #2... (I've never played this one... though I want to), then #3. It did however, become one of the most ugly games graphically I have ever seen. When you fought the bad guys looked cool (like in all the DW games), but walking around was atrocious. The hero looked like a zoggin' cupcake! That sword is actually a candle! *groan* but other than that it was very cool. 'cept I keep forgetting where one orb is, and the orb I forget is always different. ARGH! Very cool though, how the goof off has his little tricks... I love that idea! But there's always the ones that really suck. The one I'm thinking of right now is Hydlide. I HATE THAT GAME! Urgh! It's friggin' horrible. I hate how you fight, first of all. "I shall walk at you to kill you! HAHA!" and does anyone else find it maddening that merely walking around when you're not in the grass wounds you? I've died just meandering before. No monsters, just walking. ACK DW strikes again with 4. I liked this. The overheads were once again awful, but the way the game came together was a cool idea, and the monster grafx were among the best on the NES ever. Necrosaro looked just plain BAD! Great game to just push the mute button and turn on the radio, though. Can't stand DW music. Then the Ultima games. First off, did anyone find exactly what you were supposed to do in the first one? I think I was supposed to beat up a big ugly somewhere, but WHERE? And it took way to long to beef yourself up to any level even slightly resembling respectable. Ugh. Quest of the Avatar was much better, though I detest the idea of using -both- spell points AND components. At least you got your MPs back by walking. The components, though a pain, were a nice touch, I thought though. And at least they got rid of the damned food thing! In Ultima I, the annoyance of food was only surpassed by the fact that probably every dang treasure chest was trapped. Did anyone else find this annoying? Am I the only one who REALLY got fed up with getting almost no gold out of every chest and subsequently spending MORE than I got curing colds and poison?! I know I'm forgetting something... what could it be... oh yeah... FF! Final Fantasy is hands down the best RPG the NES has seen. There was only 2 gripes I ever had with this game. #1: your guys don't have the common sense to not slash a dead monster. (Picture a group fighting a pack of mummies... Black Mage: "FIRE 2!" *all the mummies but one die* Fighter: *starts hacking at the remaining ashes of one of the dead mummies as the Black Belt beats up the last mummy* Black Mage: (to fighter) "What the hell are you doing?!" Fighter: "I don't care if you charred it to ashes! I have to kill it!").... #2: if you're going to call a character a thief, LET HIM STEAL! Or at least let him unlock stuff or something! The friggin' guy was almost useless! Thieves are supposed to be like really awesome characters! Okay, enuf of my rants. What do I know, I'm just a cat! hehehe... TomCat =^..^= Questions? Comments?
